The 03SEP2018 announced the Russian Ministry of Defense's information service that the head of the Russian Baltic Navy initiated a readiness check of its federation in Leningrad Oblast, mainly in Saint Petersburg. According to the information service, the purpose of emergency preparedness control has been to evaluate the ability to raise the combat preparedness of the tested units with the watchdog staff. In total, 10 ships, smaller submarines, miners and support vessels have been involved in emergency preparedness control. Some exercises will also be carried out in the Gulf of Finland.1
The 04SEP2018 also announced the Russian Ministry of Defense's information service that parts of the Russian Baltic Sea Navy based in Kaliningrad Oblast should begin an exercise. The exercise would include 15 naval ships as a naval combat group. Exercises that were to be carried out included torpedo shooting, air and coastal targets and submarine hunting. The Baltic Sea Navy Air Force would also participate in the exercise. The exercise would also include landing torrents against an unprotected coast simulated by the Chmeljovka practice field. The landing was to be supported, partly by the forces of naval combat with artillery fighting and partly by air forces. The aim of the landing was to take a bridgehead for a continued offensive.2 Here it should be added that landings are per se offensive even if it is within the framework of a defensive or offensive operation.
On the same day, a separate press release was also published regarding the 336. Marine Infantry League's participation in the previously announced exercise. In this press release it was found that the exercise would be carried out with sharp ammunition, and that the participating parts of the Marine Infantry Warrior began to execute execution before implementation. The extensive action in the context of a battalion battle group. Parallel to this, training / practice in airlanding with parachute was also carried out alongside the fleet's span unit, probably 561. Marina Spetsnazbrigaden. The article shows that co-operation would also be carried out with a gathering association, possibly the 561. Marina Spetsnazbrigaden.3
On 05SEP2018, a press release is published showing that the Maritime Combat Group conducted a move to its field of practice. In addition, it was argued that submarine hijackers of the KA-27PL model had begun looking for a submarine from the "conventional opponent", upon detection, targeting would be transferred to the maritime combat group. Submarine yachts would also use their own systems to detect the submarine and combat this with sink bombs, participating vessels in submarine hunting should be evaluated individually. In addition, the ships, Stojkij, Soobrazitielnyj, Zelenyj Dol, Serpuchov, Passat, Liven, Gejzer, Zaretjnyj and Tjuvasjija were also reported, 4 in total 9 of the 15 to be included in the exercise.
The 06SEP2018 published a press release stating that about 600 marine infantry and 20 BTR-82A and another 10 material teams had completed a landing. Prior to this, mining will be carried out to enable landing. At the commencement of the landing, a coastal security force by means of fast-paced boats shall carry out landing and ensure a progressive road for the subsequent main strength. The landing must have been supported by ships from the maritime combat group. Parallel with the landing, submarine hunting is also required. The landing vessels Korolev, Minsk and Aleksandr Sjabalin shall have participated in landing as well as landing vessels of the type Djugon.5. On the basis of 15 ships reported, it would imply that three of these were landing vessels of the type Djugon.
The three landing vessels Korolev, Minsk and Aleksandr Sjabalin will also carry out an air defense exercise against the "conventional opponent" in connection with the implementation of the aforementioned landing. This has to be done, partly with various forms of electronic counterparty passive and active, partly with the aid of the ship's air defense system. The vessels shall also support the implementation of the landing with their vessel artillery.6
As part of the landing, the healthcare service was also tested. Damages that were practiced were those that are expected to arise in battle in a landing area. Transport of injured persons was also practiced by helicopter and vehicle, returning to the landing vessels. The assembly site for injured persons shall also be established in the landing area where a first detention of the injured persons was carried out before transport. Participating healthcare professionals in the exercise should have reached about 50, and 10 different healthcare teams must have been used.7
The 07SEP2018 was announced that the Stojkij and Soobrazitielnyj corvettes and the Zaretjnyj and Tjuvasjija robotic boats carried out combat of the "conventional opponent's" naval and air combat forces. This combat must have been carried out by vessel artillery.8 Finally, on 08SEP2018, the ships and air carriers included in the previously described exercise were returned to their regular grouping sites.9
What makes this exercise more interesting than before? It is mainly three factors that make the exercise interesting, the three are medical ability, scenario and time relationships.
The first and perhaps most interesting factor is the health care exercise that was carried out in connection with the landing exercise. In the former organization, from the early 1990s, for marine infantry battalions, the healthcare planks consisted of 5 individuals, 10 and a Marine Infantry Breath's healthcare company amounted to 27 individuals.11 Based on what was reported in the exercise, it would mean that a ten doubling of the amount of healthcare staff occurred at battalion level. What would, however, be contrary to such an increase is that it was a battalion battle party which is often temporarily compounded.12 On the contrary, it was a landing rise to what is termed unreserved coast, but it could be a minimum level of ability. As healthcare capacity would be even greater if it was a defensive coastal strip, the landing was carried out against.
This increase in medical ability also becomes interesting from the perspective that the protective ability would increase in marine infantry battalions at the 336. Marine infantry warrior, compared to that found in the early 1990s, based on supplied equipment.13 However, the increase in healthcare capacity can be considered logical. Then a credible medical ability can be seen as a basic need for the individual soldier. This will increase its willingness to fight and this will probably be considered crucial in, for example, landing company where the risk of losses may be considered to be imminent.
The next interesting part of this exercise is that in spite of a landing exercise against unprotected coasts, the opposing player appeared to succeed in establishing landslide against the landing area, and succeeded in introducing air force forces against the landing. Initially, this indicates two things: the first is that local airfield was missing over the landing area, which is usually regarded as a prerequisite.14 In addition, the blocking strength initially appears to protect the landing area against the supply of dressings, either been too weak or missing when the played opponent appeared affect the area of land
This could mean that either the landing took place in a scenario where a rapidly deteriorating security situation was triggered and the strengths were judged as such that a rapid and surprising landing could be successful or that the Russian gangs were inferior. The latter may be considered less likely since landings are considered to be one of the most complex military operations being carried out, 16 with which implementation is clearly underestimated. In this regard, the former can be seen as more possible, which could also explain the relatively comprehensive healthcare capacity in relation to previous organization.
This also makes the initially concerned contingency control of the Baltic Sea navy in Leningrad Oblast interesting. As this contingency control could also include the participating links in the landing exercise based on Kaliningrad Oblast, if a validation regarding the actual ability to work under a rapidly deteriorated security situation was sought. However, no such information has been found, but it may be seen that sp could have been the case.
However, regardless of whether the exercise was conducted in the context of emergency preparedness control, the time conditions appeared to have been compressed for the exercise participants. When the press release regarding the exercise was published on 04SEP2018 and the landing was completed on 06SEP2018. Of course, a number of preparations can be started before to facilitate the exercise, if known by the participants. In this context, it should be noted in particular that almost all elements of a landing appear to be practiced, albeit with shortened distances. That is, loading, sealing, ensuring free passage in the landing congestion area, landing implementation. The battalion battle group practiced would constitute what is called beach security battalion and which takes a bridgehead to allow armies later to continue offensive inland.17
In conclusion, as previously discussed, the most interesting thing about this landing exercise, in what can be read through open information, is the marked increase in healthcare capacity compared with its size. In addition, the exercise contains traces of what can indicate very prompt action in implementing landing operations. However, only the possible amount of open information available can be seen as the case may be.
