The acquisition has been prepared under the name K22, where K means experiment and 22 years of completion.
NOW, as a new opportunity, it has emerged that the Swedish Army may be involved in the procurement. The end result would be that Finland and Sweden would have Sniper Rifles based on the same weapon platform.
The needs of the countries are significant, because in Finland, for example, the intention is to partially replace the current Sniper rifles of new and newer Rifles. Exact figures are not disclosed by the Defense Forces.
“In the case of Finland, this is now a self-loading sniper rifle and support weapon to be planned with Sako at an early stage. They will significantly increase the firepower and accuracy of local forces and operational forces, ”says Infantry Inspector, Colonel Rainer Peltoniemi from the Army Staff.
"The same project also involves ammunition and optronics, i.e. sights and dark capability."
Its caliber is the so-called 7.62 NATO. The new model would replace the old Russian-made Dragunov sniper rifle based on the 60's design and partially 7.62 the sniper rifle 85, which is Finnish.

But let’s start from the beginning: two years ago the Swedish Armed Forces outlined a plan to introduce a new “firearms system”, intended to replace the personal weapons of their soldiers. This included both assault rifles currently in service (the older H&K G3 as well as the newer FN FNC, AK4 and AK5 respectively in their Swedish designations), as well as the current AI Arctic Warfare/L96A1 sniper rifle (Psg 90) and the FN Minimi (Ksp 90). The plan is also to acquire a designated marksman rifle, a role which currently is filled with scoped assault rifles. The budget for the project would run from 2021 to 2030, with the major procurements being made starting 2025.
