That the incident had occurred at all only emerged recently in one of a number of leaked U.S. military documents. Araabia Liiga võttis täna oma rüppe tagasi Süüria valitsuse, mis oli kõrvale tõrjutud alates 2011. aastast, kui demokraatiameelsete protestide julm mahasurumine diktaator Bashar al-Assadi režiimi poolt käivitas verise kodusõja.

«Süüria Araabia Vabariigi valitsusdelegatsioonid jätkavad oma osalust Araabia Liiga kohtumistel,» seisis liiga välisministrite üksmeelses otsuses.

2011. aasta novembris peatas 22-liikmeline organ Damaskuse osaluse seoses rahumeelsete protestidega räige mahasurumisega, mis tõi kaasa tsiviilkonflikti, milles on hukkunud üle 500 000 inimese, sundinud ümber asuma miljoneid ning räsinud riigi taristut ja tööstust.

Kui lahingud on valdavalt vaibunud, jääb suur osa riigi põhjaosast valitsuse kontrolli alt välja ning 12 aastat kestnud konfliktile pole veel poliitilist lahendust leitud.

Assad on olnud alates konflikti algusest poliitiliselt isoleeritud, kuid viimastel nädalatel on enne Araabia Liiga 19. mai tippkohtumist Saudi linnas käinud aktiivne diplomaatiline tegevus.
