Paris – September 10, 2025. From the early hours of the morning, France has been gripped by an unprecedented day of unrest. Thousands of demonstrators, part of the “Bloquons Tout” (“Block Everything”) movement, have flooded the streets of Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nantes, and other cities, with the declared aim of shutting down the economy and forcing President Emmanuel Macron to step down.
The Day’s Events
Barricades and blockades: In Paris, Bordeaux, and Marseille, protesters have erected flaming barricades; in Nantes and Montpellier, police have used tear gas to disperse crowds.
Transport chaos: Paris’s Gare du Nord Eurostar hub was targeted; train and flight cancellations and delays are widespread due to strikes by railway and airport staff.
Arrests: By 8 a.m., around 50 people had been detained in Paris alone for “threatening public order.”
Massive police deployment: The Interior Ministry has mobilized 80,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide to prevent sabotage and blockades of strategic infrastructure.
Reasons Behind the Protest
The unrest erupted after the collapse of Prime Minister François Bayrou’s government, which lost a parliamentary confidence vote over its austerity budget. The plan included:
Cutting two national public holidays
Freezing pensions and welfare payments
Eliminating thousands of public sector jobs
Billions of euros in healthcare cuts3
While intended to reduce public debt — now at 114% of GDP — the measures were seen as a direct attack on working‑class families and essential services.
Political and International Dimensions
Beyond economic grievances, some protesters denounce Macron’s foreign policy, accusing him of aligning too closely with NATO and taking decisions that risk dragging France into direct confrontation with Russia. New Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has pledged to push through the same Macron‑backed budget, further fueling public anger.
An “Insurrectional Climate”
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and Paris Police Prefect Laurent Nuñez have warned that the day could spiral into an “insurrectional climate”, given the participation of far‑left and ultra‑left groups and the lack of a centralized leadership.
What’s Next
The “Bloquons Tout” movement has already announced further mobilizations for September 18. With Macron’s approval rating at a record low of just 23% and the country deeply divided, France faces a stark choice: a rapid political compromise or the risk of escalating protests and violence.

Massive anti-austerity strikes swept France as unions claimed one million protesters took to the streets, while officials put the number closer to 500,000.
Teachers, train drivers, hospital staff, and students walked out, paralyzing schools and regional transport.
Demonstrators demanded Macron and new Prime Minister Lecornu abandon looming budget cuts, scrap pension changes, and tax the wealthy instead.
Clashes broke out in Paris, Lyon, and Nantes, with police firing teargas and arresting over 180 people.
The protests mark Macron’s toughest test since the pension battle.
