More and more Russian banks are losing the opportunity to make settlements in dollars, following the largest state-owned credit institutions that fell under the blocking sanctions of the US Treasury.
The largest US bank in terms of assets - JP Morgan - in August began to close correspondent accounts for Russian "colleagues", without which payments in dollars are impossible, Interfax reports , citing sources in the financial market.
Under the forced de-dollarization, in particular, Bank St. Petersburg fell, whose clients were warned about the impossibility of making both incoming and outgoing payments through correspondent accounts in JPM. The bank recommended converting the contracts into a currency other than the dollar.
In August, JPM terminated relations with a number of small Russian banks, an Interfax source said. According to another interlocutor of the agency, large banks also unofficially warn customers that transfers through a correspondent account in JPM will become impossible from September 1.
Difficulties for Russian banks with making payments in "unfriendly" currencies are growing, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation admitted in July. In addition to JP Morgan, American Citibank sends out "letters of happiness" about the closure of correspondent accounts. American banks are ready to make an exception only for Gazprombank, through which settlements for gas are carried out, and the structures of the Moscow Exchange, in particular the National Clearing Center.
In May, the Austrian Raiffeisenbank International, whose client, among others, was Tinkoff Bank, notified Russian bankers of the closure of euro correspondent accounts.
The loss of access to foreign exchange transactions unnerves the Central Bank and bankers, who have growing risks on obligations to customers. Before the start of the war, individuals and companies held $280 billion in foreign currency accounts, an amount that is equivalent to half of the country's gold and foreign exchange reserves. But now there is even more currency in the country due to closed import channels: in January-July, the economy received a $192 billion trade surplus and a $166 billion payment surplus.
This surplus accumulates in accounts that can turn into dust at any moment. Banks are forced to push the currency out with all their might, given the risks of its accumulation, said Yegor Susin, managing director of GPB Private Banking.
The main solution here is to phase out the use of dollars and euros, but this process is not going quickly, adds Susin.
