A British army officer in his 40’s was repeatedly stabbed up to 12 times with two kitchen knives by a masked attacker on a moped bike near the Brompton Barracks in Chatham, Kent.
The soldier received serious wounds to his face and body, leaving him in a life threatening condition.
Kent Police announced they do not believe the attack on Tuesday is ‘terror-related’ and are investigating whether it may be ‘mental health-related’.
The assailant, aged 24, was arrested. His identity has not been revealed.

Picture this: the poor officer, stabbed a dozen times with a 10-inch knife, his screams piercing through the air. Folks initially thought it was just a typical road rage incident, until they saw the officer's wife, desperate and begging for help. And our supposed lunatic? He licked the blood off his blade like it was some sick treat.
Now, let's get real. You don't waltz up to an army barracks looking for a military target and then pull the mental health card. It's a farce, plain and simple.

Several knives have been recovered after an army officer in uniform was stabbed near a barracks.
A 24-year-old man was arrested after the attack in Sally Port Gardens in Gillingham, Kent, on Tuesday evening.
The stabbing took place near Brompton Barracks, headquarters of the 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment.
Police said the motive for the attack is currently unknown, and added they are "exploring the possibility that it may be mental health-related" and that "a number of knives have been seized".
Sky News understands the attack is not being treated as a terror incident.
Forensic officers have been seen crawling along Sally Port Gardens on their hands and knees as they investigate the attack.
Meanwhile, a forensic officer was seen entering a property on Mooring Road in nearby Rochester, where a man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in relation to the attack on the army officer.
Other forensic officers, with sniffer dogs, searched a cordoned-off area of Mooring Road.
One local resident heard a helicopter on Tuesday evening and looked out to see a man having been detained by police.
Another neighbour said he saw a man in handcuffs being led by police into a car.
'Huge scream'
A woman earlier said she heard a "huge scream", ran to her window and saw the attacker stabbing the soldier on the ground near the barracks in Gillingham before escaping on a moped.
Kent Police said the victim - in his 40s - is in a serious but stable condition after being airlifted to hospital.
Another witness said he saw a man in "cream camouflage" motionless on the ground after the attack.
"I came out on the street, went over to the corner. It was a minute and a half after the incident, there were already 10 people around the body," said Alex Reynolds.
"The body was lying there and not moving."
Mr Reynolds and others have described a moped speeding away and someone trying to chase it in a car.
Ring doorbell footage captured shouting and screams, with someone appearing to yell "what are you doing?" and "help".

Police said they were keeping an “open mind” as to the motive behind the attack that left Lt Col Mark Teeton, one of the most senior officers at Brompton Barracks in Gillingham, Kent, home to the Royal School of Military Engineering, fighting for his life.
Lt Col Teeton was airlifted to hospital after being stabbed around 12 times while in his uniform just before 6pm on Tuesday, by a man wearing a ski mask and allegedly armed with two 10in knives.
He was told that the victim, now identified as Lt Col Teeton, goes for a walk every night at around 6pm.
One witness alleged the attacker had come seeking out military targets and the lieutenant’s heroic wife “came out and started trying to pull the guy off”.
Another witness told KentOnline: “His wife tried to pull the attacker off. [The attacker] didn’t want her though, he just wanted the soldier.
“Nobody else in the vicinity was in danger – the only person he was targeting was the soldier he attacked.”
