A Syrian migrant has been arrested in Germany for plotting a mass machete attack on German soldiers at a barracks in the Bavarian town of Hof.

The 27-year-old suspect was detained on Thursday and was in court Friday morning.

According to the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office, the suspect had bought two machetes and planned to kill as many soldiers as possible from the Upper Franconia barracks.

The foiled attack is being treated as terror-related with the suspect assumed to be a supporter of extremist Islamic ideology.

He will remain in pre-trial detention.

A Syrian man is suspected of planning a lunchtime machete attack against German soldiers from a barracks in Bavaria that is about an hour away from two major U.S. Army installations, the General Prosecutor’s Office in Munich said Friday.

He was arrested Thursday in Hof, home to the German military’s Upper Franconia barracks. It houses about 550 soldiers as well as the Central Investigation Office for Technical Reconnaissance, where the German military develops new electromagnetic surveillance technology.

The town in far northeastern Bavaria, near the Czech border, is in an administrative region neighboring the U.S. military’s Grafenwoehr Training Area and Vilseck base.

The 27-year-old man, who has not been identified in accordance with German privacy laws, is still in police custody. The formal accusation against him is preparing a serious violent act endangering the state.

He acquired two machetes and intended to attack soldiers during their lunch breaks in downtown Hof to incite public fear, authorities said in a statement.

Kohapeal olnud eestlane, Rapid Security tegevjuht Mikk Mehide rääkis, et oli kahe kolleegiga Rotterdamis kahepäevasel seminaril. Kui seminari töine osa läbi sai, suunduti silla jalamil olevasse elamuskeskusesse. Mehide ütles, et kui elamuskeskusele oli ring peale tehtud, siis läks seltskond keskuse ette, et hakata restorani suunduma.

„Üks hetk kuulsime, kuidas nurga tagant karjuti, et pussitatakse, tulge eest ära, ja pärast öeldi, et minge kõik peitu. Ja siis tekkis juba paanika. Mina sain kohe aru, olin kõige lähemal sellele sissepääsule. Ma sain aru, et asi on halvasti, et rünnatakse, et ilmselt võibki olla terrorirünnak, ja suundusin kohe tagasi sinna elamuskeskusse. Seal olid pöördväravad ees ja suutsin varjuda ning sealt edasi mina otseselt ei näinud, aga minu kolleegid jäid veel siis [olukorraga] tegelema,“ kirjeldas ta.

Mehide ütles, et üks tema kolleege, müügijuht Siim Saar võttis kohe vastu ühe samuti seminaril käinud mehe, kes oli vigastada saanud, hakkas talle esmaabi andma ja viis ta eemale, et ta rohkem viga ei saaks. „Ja teine müügijuht Hendrik Siht oli siis see, kes võttis kätte mingi mööblieseme ja ründajat takistama, sest ta oli juba sealt värvate vahelt sisse saada, suutnud meie inimeste hulgast ühte vigastada.“

Teisel müügijuhil õnnestus ründaja kahjutuks teha nii, et too kukkus maha. Siis jõudsid juba kohale politseinikud, kes ründajale peale hüppasid.

A man has been arrested after allegedly setting two fires in the western German city of Essen that left 30 people injured and driving a van into two shops, authorities said Sunday.

Emergency services were alerted to two fires in residential buildings in quick succession shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, police said. The injured people included eight children who were seriously hurt, and two of them were in a life-threatening condition after inhaling smoke.

Shortly after the fires broke out, a van drove into two shops in the city, causing damage to property but no injuries. The suspect then allegedly threatened people with weapons, but several men managed to push him back with shovels and poles and hold him until police arrived.

Police said the suspect was a 41-year-old Essen resident with Syrian citizenship. They said the man’s motive appeared to be that his wife had left him, and he targeted houses and shops where people who supported her lived.
