At the beginning of the year a new organization, both for peace- and wartime, was taken into use in the Finnish Defence Forces and during this year the major organizational reform of the whole of the military will be completed. The goal of the reform is to balance the size, activity and resources of the Defence Forces and make sure that they can complete their mission. The planning and implementation of the reform has taken three years, and from the start of 2015 the peace time organization is made up of Defence Command and Centers, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the National Defence University.
Defence Command 2015
Defence Command leads the planning and improvement of the Defence Forces, oversees the building and maintenance of abilities and controls the use of assets. Defence Command have five directly subordinate Centers:
-The C5 Center develops and maintains the Defence Forces' integrated intelligence, monitoring and command environments. It also produces administrative IT services for the entire defence administration and, when required, other governmental organisations.
-The Services Center produces all administrative, support and expert services for the Defence Forces.
-The Intelligence Center have centralized all agencies for national military intelligence. The Intelligence Center is made up of the former Intelligence Command and the Intelligence Research Establishment.
-The Research Center have centralized all R&D activity. The Research Center is made up of the former Defence Forces Technical Research Agency and the Naval Research Centre.
-The Logistics Center have centralized all essential logistic and equipment-related activities in the Defence Forces. The Center is made up of the former Logistics Centers for the Army, Navy and Air Force, their subordinate Logistics Regiments and parts of the former Center for Military Medicine.
Army 2015
The Army is tasked with defending Finnish land territory. During peace time this means to plan, build, maintain and use land defence capabilities. In addition the Army can give executive assistance and support to other governmental agencies to uphold and secure vital functions of the society.
The responsibility and command of Army Crisis Management Operations was moved from Pori Brigade to Army Command in Mikkeli, but Pori Brigade will remain responsible for training, equiping and recruiting the staff and reservists for the operations.
The Army is made up of Army Command and eight units:
-Armoured Brigade (Hämeenlinna and Riihimäki)
-Guard Jaeger Regiment (Helsinki)
-Jaeger Brigade (Sodankylä and Rovanniemi)
-Kainuu Brigade (Kajaani)
-Karelia Brigade (Kouvola-Vekaranjärvi)
-Pori Brigade (Säkylä and Niinisalo)
-Utti Jaeger Regiment (Kouvola-Utti)
-Army Academy (Lappeenranta)
Lapland Air Defence Regiment has been made a part of the Jaeger Brigade, the Signals Regiment a part of the Armoured Brigade, the Artillery Brigade a part of Pori Brigade and the Reserve Officer School a part of the Army Academy. On level of command was scrapped completely when the former four Military provinces along with their General Staffs were disbanded along with 7 of 19 Military districts. The following units were also disbanded: North Karelia Brigade, the Pioneer Regiment and Häme Regiment.
Navy 2015
The Navy is responsible for the maintenance and development of the capability of maritime defence as well as for maritime surveillance, securing territorial integrity and safeguarding vital sea lines of communication. The Navy is organized into Naval Command and four units
-Coastal Fleet (Turku)
-Coastal Brigade (Kirkkonummi)
-Nyland Brigade (Raseborg)
-Naval Academy (Helsinki)
Training for naval and coastal units have been placed in separated units while the former Naval Commands and Kotka Coastal Battalion, formerly a part of Gulf of Finland Naval command have been disbanded.
Air Force 2015
The Air Force is responsible for the continuous surveillance and policing of the nation’s airspace along with the building and maintenance of a real-time air picture. Airspace violations will be prevented by force if necessary. The primary wartime mission is defensive counter-air fighter operations. The Air Force is into Air Force Command and four units:
-Lapland Air Command (Rovanniemi)
-Karelia Air Command (Siilinjärvi)
-Satakunta Air Command (Pirkkala)
-Air Force Academy (Jyväskylä)
The fighter activity will be centered to Rovanniemi and Siilinjärvi, transport, liaison flights and testing to Pirkkala and training to Jyväskylä. The Air Force Technical School and the Training Air Wing have been disbanded.
