http://www.tank-net.com/forums/index.ph ... 86&page=72My boss recently had an exchange with a CHP deputy about this. It's for public release anyway, so I guess it's okay if I post relevant excerpts.

There is a strong opinion in Turkey that the Gulen Movement was behind this coup attempt. There is also strong evidence supporting this opinion. In light of these evidence, the Gulen movement and their mastermind behind the coup is now under investigation.
Interestingly enough, the Gulen Movement has been acting hand in hand with the AKP government for over ten years, between 2002 and 2013. In fact, Fethullah Gulen and his Hizmet Movement was supported and maintained by the AKP itself. Gulenists were placed within the state bureaucracy, in legal and/or illegal ways. This meant an obvious collaboration between the Gulen Movement and the AKP government to rule Turkey with political Islam. This collaboration also meant that Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s legacy of a secular and civilized Turkish Republic was to be destroyed for a new state model.
In order to succeed, the AKP government has consciously put Gulenist people in state institutions of utmost importance, such as the military, judiciary, academia, bureaucracy, and media. The Gulenists, with the support and further collaboration of the AKP government in power, have detained, imprisoned, and prevented patriot military officers, intellectuals, academics, and journalists from doing their professions.
Through the end of 2013, between December 17 and 25, the Gulenists took action against Erdogan and his cabinet to expose their corruption. During this time, several ministers and their family members were taken into custody, followed by investigations. This was an open war of the Gulenists against the AKP, pointing out the end of collaboration between Fethullah Gulen and the AKP. Erdogan even reproached, asking “What have they [Gulen] asked and we haven't given”. This was also a confession of the close ties and years long collaboration between Gulen and the AKP. Today, after years of ignoring all remarks and notices made by the opposition, the AKP finally admits that they have made a mistake.
The Gulen Movement and the AKP, two islamist political projects, are now in clash of interests. Since 2013, numerous counter attacks took place between the AKP government and the Gulen movement. The coup attempt was the last, and perhaps the most dangerous move of the Gulenists against the AKP government.

I guess it's easy to purge masses of real or suspected Gülen sympathizers from public service if you put them there yourself in the first place.
