We will introduce bipartisan sanctions against Turkey if they invade Syria and will call for their suspension from NATO if they attack Kurdish forces who assisted the U.S. in the destruction of the ISIS Caliphate.

Trumpi erakordne hoiatus NATO liitlasele Türgile tuli pisut pärast seda, kui Valge Maja teatas, et USA sõjavägi taandub Süürias Türgi piiril asuvatelt aladelt. Otsus näis andvat Türgile rohelise tule rünnata oma kauaaegseid kurdi vaenlasi, kuigi kurdid sõdivad Süürias koos USA-ga äärmusrühmituse Islamiriik vastu. USA presidendi lahkumisotsusele järgnes kriitikarahe tema enda erakonnast. Vabariiklaste arvates reetis Trump kurdi sissid.
Kõrge USA ametniku andmeil on Ühendriigid Põhja-Süüria Türgiga piirnevatelt aladelt tõmmanud siiski tagasi väga väikese osa vägedest. Ametniku sõnul liigutatati vägesid vaid väga lühikese vahemaa võrra. Ta lisas: «Muus osas ei ole meie sõjalises võimekuses (Süüria) kirdeosas mingeid muutusi.»
