Russia employs around 400,000 people across its three main intelligence agencies. The defence ministry’s “main directorate”, the GU — still widely known by its Soviet-era initials as the GRU — has wide-ranging interests in Nato affairs and military technology, as well as in subversion and sabotage.

The FSB is focused on domestic intelligence but its “fifth service” collects foreign intelligence from Russia’s near-abroad — including Ukraine. The SVR, the inheritor to the KGB’s first chief directorate, is tasked solely with foreign intelligence gathering.

Western officials said there were typically three types of Russian agent at work in Europe: declared agents, often filling roles such as the defence attaché, working for the GRU; undeclared agents, who might be disguised by the SVR as part of a trade delegation; and illegals, who are sleeper agents working deeply undercover.

“Offence is often the best defence — especially when things get ugly, as they are now,” said one European security official. “It can be a good time to recruit.”

Russian tech giant Yandex has blamed one of its employees for the hacking and subsequent leak of data from Yandex Food, a popular food delivery service in Russia.

Among the many users affected are serving agents of Russia’s security services and military, who in several cases even ordered food to their places of work using their official email addresses.

This 1.2 gigabyte leak includes user emails and passwords, and a large number of phone numbers, addresses, and orders made on the platform. Russia’s state media watchdog Roskomnadzor has strongly attempted to block its proliferation.

An officer in the German army reserve has been charged with spying for allegedly passing information to Russian intelligence services between 2014 and 2020, federal prosecutors said Friday.

The officer, referred to as Ralph G., is suspected of supplying information on the German military's reserves, "civil defence", the impact of sanctions levelled against Moscow in 2014, and the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project between Russia and Germany, the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The accused had been "in contact with a Russian intelligence service through various people since October 2014 at the latest", prosecutors said.

Until March 2020, the suspect is said to have passed these contacts "documents and information on numerous occasions", relating both to the army reserve and business.

Alongside his role in the reserve, the suspect "belonged to several German business committees" thanks to his civilian profession.

He is also said to have shared the "personal data of high ranking members of the Bundeswehr" and figures from the business world, "including contact details".

"In return for his services, the accused received invitations to events organised by the Russian government agencies," prosecutors said.

Ralph G. is the latest in a string of suspected Russian spies uncovered on German soil.

Russian scientist Ilnur Nagaev is currently standing trial accused of spying for Moscow while working at a German university.

Nagaev, who was stopped by authorities last year, is accused of having shared information about Europe's Ariane space rocket programme with Russia's foreign intelligence service SVR.

In October 2021, a German man was handed a two-year suspended sentence for passing on floor plans of parliament buildings to Russian secret services while employed by a security company.

Last August, a former employee of the British embassy in Berlin was arrested on suspicion of having passed on documents to Russian intelligence.
