http://kitup.military.com/2010/11/corps ... z311EpLwfnYou’ll remember, we made the same comment about accuracy many months ago after I had dinner with a close Marine friend of mine who’s a Gunner. He argued that the suppressive effect of accuracy is more potent than 200 rounds flying wide.
To cut short what could be a much more detailed debate on the merits of each, I state simply that the Marine Corps decided that the M249 SAW, through it's weight and often unreliability, was no longer appropriate for the future concept of the Corps.
http://www.hkpro.com/forum/hk-talk/1978 ... rifle.htmlThe Marine Corps began exhaustive testing in 2005 to procure such a weapon, the goal being to procure a highly accurate, lightweight and more reliable alternative to the M249 SAW for the infantry team and squad. At the end of the competition, in which Heckler and Koch was in competition with seven different models from six different companies, including FN and Colt Defense, the Marine Corps selected the M27 IAR in August 2011. Price is always a huge issue when dealing with military contracts (Heckler and Koch was in the middle between Colt on the low end and FN on the high end), but not the only factor. Performance of the actual weapon is clearly key, but also is past performance of the company itself. Heckler and Koch has a long-held reputation of quality and reliability and that weighed greatly in the final decision.
